Earned Income Tax Credit

Community Action Kentucky received the Earned Income Tax Credit and other Asset Formation Opportunities grant through the Office of Community Services. This initiative is a partnership between the Kentucky Domestic Violence Association, Community Action Kentucky and several other project partners. The Earned Income Tax Credit  Program will be available in 33 counties and provide free tax preparation, financial counseling and credit repair to low-income families.

Governor Beshear Launches Campaign to Urge Kentuckians to Apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit: Governor Steve Beshear encourages all eligible Kentuckians to apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).  According to Governor Beshear, the EITC is a strong anti-poverty tool for Kentucky and has had a positive impact on local economic growth.  Unfortunately, it is reported that 20% of eligible Kentuckians do not claim their benefits.  Governor Beshear promoted the use of 200 free tax preparation sites in 90 Kentucky counties; eligible Kentuckians can get help applying for the EITC in these locations.  Click here to read the press release in entirety.  Source: southerngovernors.org

The Tax Man Has Up To $5000 for Hard-Working Kentuckians (Radio Story): EITC Awareness Day, which was January 30, is designed to encourage families to investigate their eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) refund.  This year, eligible families can qualify for nearly $5000.  Candace Mattison, Community Action Kentucky's Program Services Director, explains that this mone can help families with vehicle repairs, paying their mortgage, or other high-end expenses.  Mattison suggests that many more families may be eligible this year because of the recession.  She warns families against using "refund anticipation" loans and other traps that offer an instant tax refund at a price.  Instead, Mattison encourages families to use free volunteer tax preparation sites that offer electric filing; most families are able to get their refund in about a week.  Click here to listn to or read the radio story that was sent out on the Kentucky Public News Service and played on 25 radio stations across the state.  Source: publicnewsservice.org
